Reiki healing for Animals

Reiki Energy and Our Animal Friends

I submit to you an educational article on Reiki energy and the powerful, yet subtle effects it has on the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual bodies of animals. I have been keenly aware of a growing number of people out there who are very receptive to energy bodywork, and any non-traditional healing modalities now available to us. It occurred to me that many people might not know that Reiki is very effective for animals as well.

During a hands-on session, Reiki energy moves through the hands of the practitioner and into the client. With animals, the specific hand positions are not as important but generally correspond to the “charka system” of the body or the energy centers. Working these areas can bring about profound clearing removing energy blocks in the body. Reiki practitioners only receive the energy from “source” and then offer it; it is when the animal or person is receptive to accept the energy that healing can occur. I want to note here that Reiki can be sent over a distance as well; I was taught that with this type energy there is no space or time issue, so the client need not be present to experience this powerful energy. It is similar to a very focused form of telepathic communication and the results can be truly amazing.

As I start a session with an animal, I always “offer” Reiki at a distance and let the animal come to me if he/she decides to. During a Reiki session, you may observe your animal becoming extremely relaxed.

Reiki Practitioners do not diagnose or take the place of a veterinarian or doctor. When I use the term healing, I do not mean this in the traditional doctor patient situation where a diagnosis is made and treatment is prescribed; but rather, an alternative modality such as Reiki is offered in which the person feels it is time to try an alternative modality to bring about a change regarding a physical or emotional ailment.

For me, the real benefit comes when I hear from a client I have worked with doing hands on or sending Reiki over a distance and it is the description of their animal’s physical and emotional behavior that has made a real believer out of me.

In one situation, a cat named “Leelu” had been traumatized before coming to live with her new family. She was very distant and scared and could not be in the same room as her owners even after several years with them. I worked with Leelu sending Reiki for short periods daily for two weeks, after that time Chris and Michelle advised me she was now coming down onto the bed to sleep with them and stopped running away when they entered the room. They knew this cat better than I did so when they said, “the results were amazing, and that she was a different cat”; I could only believe that it must be true.

Another client I have been working with has a cat and a dog the cat had some health issues and the dog was extremely agitated and barked constantly. I have been sending distance Reiki to them several times weekly for two months, her response has been, “her cat is now eating and wanting to go outside, and the dog is now calm and relaxed they have not been this way in months. This is truly a miracle”.

Veterinarians who offer a holistic approach to companion animal care are recognizing Reiki benefits as well. Ask your veterinarian about Reiki. Worth noting, is the benefit to animals undergoing cancer care or dealing with end of life issues. Reiki can help them feel calm and relaxed about making the transition.

The Animal Reiki source in San Rafael and The Animal Healing Institute located in the East Bay are dedicated to Reiki for animals and those in shelter situations.
